The European Society of Radiology was founded in December 2005 by merging the European Congress of Radiology and the European Association of Radiology, thus establishing a single house of radiology in Europe. The primary tasks of the ESR include the organisation of ECR, the leading meeting in radiology, the harmonisation of teaching programmes throughout Europe, the maintenance of EIBIR – European Institute for Biomedical Imaging Research, and the coordination of teaching activities within as well as outside Europe (ESOR – European School of Radiology).
