The General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) exists to protect patients by promoting excellence in osteopathic care.
The GOsC regulates, develops and promotes the profession of osteopathy by:
- Maintaining the definitive Register of those who have satisfied the GOsC that they can practise osteopathy safely and competently.
- Defining and maintaining high standards of education, training and clinical practice.
- Guiding osteopaths in standards of professional practice.
- Dealing promptly and effectively with osteopaths whose competence or fitness to practise is called into question.
- Developing the profession and practise of osteopathy.
- Promoting osteopathic standards and the role of the regulator.
In order to practise osteopathy in the UK, qualified practitioners must be registered with the GOsC. In the UK, the title ‘osteopath’ is protected by law and it is a criminal offence for anyone to describe themselves as an osteopath unless they are registered. This ensures that only practitioners meeting the highest standards of safety and competency can practise.
About osteopathy
Osteopathy is an established system of diagnosis and treatment that recognises that much of the pain and disability we suffer stems from abnormalities in the structure and function of the body. Founded in 1874, osteopathy aims to restore the body’s natural healing ability by using manual treatment techniques, such as stretching, mobilisation and manipulation, combined with lifestyle improvements and health advice.
Osteopathy is used for treating problems associated with muscles, ligaments, nerves and joints. It focuses not only on the joints of the spine and the nervous system but on the body as a whole. Treatment is suitable for everyone, from babies to older people.
Although osteopathy is commonly associated with treating back and neck pain, osteopaths can help with a wide variety of common health conditions including changes to posture in pregnancy; infantile colic or sleeplessness; repetitive strain injury; problems caused by driving or work strain; the pain of arthritis; and sports injuries.
