For more than 50 years Philips has been the principal force in delivering dictation and speech technologies to users around the world.
Creativity and innovation to improve the interaction between man and machines has always been at the forefront of the company’s mission.
Philips Speech Recognition Systems, with headquarters in Vienna, Austria, is part of Royal Philips Electronics. The company develops speech recognition software and specialized recognition vocabularies (ConText) for professional applications, with a strong focus on the medical and legal markets.
Philips Speech Recognition Systems became the first company to develop a commercially available speech recognition engine that enabled spoken words to be converted into text on a PC. Already in 1994 Philips Speech Recognition Systems launched SP6000, the first client/server-based continuous speech recognition system for the radiology market.
Today the company offers several products to enhance the document creation process using speech recognition and digital dictation, most importantly the document creation platform SpeechMagic™, which in 2005 has been awarded the “Technology Leadership Award” by Frost & Sullivan. Decades of experience, a portfolio of 23 recognition languages and more than 100 ConTexts (industry-specific recognition vocabularies), coupled with over 8,000 installations of SpeechMagic in hospitals, practices and law firms, bear testimony to Philips Speech Recognition System’s position as a global market leader.
Market approach
SpeechMagic 6.1 is a software development kit, which is integrated and then resold by a global partner network of more than 200 companies. Partners use SpeechMagic to add speech recognition and digital dictation capabilities to their medical IT solutions, so that they can provide end-customers with integrated medical reporting applications. Partners with thorough knowledge of their respective markets are in the best position to understand each end-customer’s needs and deliver solutions tailored to these needs.
All standard healthcare IT-systems can be powered by SpeechMagic(TM):
- Hospital Information Systems
- Electronic Medical Record Systems
- Picture Archiving and Communication Systems
- Departemental Information Systems (Radiology, Cardiology, Pathology, etc.)
- Reporting workflow applications
- Transcription platform
Philips Speech Recognition Systems distinguishes between two different types of partners: dictation partners and vertical solution partners.
- Vertical solution partners, such as EMR/HIS/RIS/PACS vendors, integrate SpeechMagic directly into their systems, to build a document creation workflow which fully corresponds to the requirements of the healthcare industry and seamlessly fits physicians’ needs for fast and efficient report generation.
- Dictation partners integrate Philips’ speech recognition technology into their own dictation solutions, which they can integrate into their customers’ existing EMR, HIS, RIS, PACS or other workflow systems. These partners have a very deep understanding of professional document creation and develop a layer around it to create easy interfaces for comprehensive systems.
This approach enables Philips Speech Recognition Systems to focus purely on the development and enhancement of its document creation platform SpeechMagic. This ensures that the company maintains its leading market position by providing advanced, industrial-grade technology for efficient document creation.
