Healthcare IT News has established itself as one of America’s leading healthcare information technology publications. The newspaper is published in partnership with The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), whose annual meeting is coming up in Orlando, FL on February 24-28, 2008. Editor Bernie Monegain gives her predictions of the key topics for HIMSS 08 and provides insight into the challenges of professional news coverage.

“Standards and interoperability (the ability of multiple systems and organizations to communicate and inter-operate) are likely to be main topics”, Bernie said. “But HIMSS tends to cover the breadth and depth of topics of concern to the healthcare industry. So, uptake of electronic health record systems and other technology will also be among the hundreds of topics.”

Healthcare IT News has an editorial office on-site during the conference. How does your team ensure they deliver an up-to-date account of the entire event’s news?

We take a look at the agenda for each day and make sure we have reporters at the main events – we always have someone from our team covering the keynote speakers for example. We also try to offer a sampling of everything that’s going on. If we wish to cover the topics of both patient safety and new legislation for example but can’t attend every session, we try to report a representative one. Plus our reporters have the advantage of covering these issues all year long through our various outlets – daily news online, our electronic NewsWeek and our monthly print publication. We also check out the show floor, meet with vendors and roam the halls to talk with conference attendees at random.

Outside the HIMSS conference, what is your main method of researching a new story?

Direct interviews sometimes triggered by press releases. We make a concerted effort to call people in the industry and talk with them about what is happening in their particular organization or niche. We try to develop new sources every day.

Healthcare IT News won the Jesse H. Neal National Business Journalism Award in 2006. How is your newspaper keeping in line with its award-winning standards?

It was a great honor to receive the award. We were all excited. But, we won without trying to. Sounds strange, but it’s true. We just have to try to do excellent work every day. When/if the awards come, it’s icing on the cake. Of course, having won once, we can’t help but want to win again! (GB)
