“Web casts allow readers to glean the experience of their professional colleagues”

While almost all healthcare journals have their own web site, many publishers see online content only as an add-on tool, delivering breaking news between two printed issues. HealthTech Wire talked to Jonathan Batchelor, web editor of HealthImaging.com, about a closer interaction between print and online content, utilizing a truly web-based medium, and the advantages of web-based publishing.

Publishing print magazines such as Health Imaging & IT, Cardiovascular Business and Molecular Imaging Insight, the TriMed Media Group provides on-line, electronic versions of its folios that duplicate the print versions. Other online content available at http://www.healthimaging.com spans the gamut of practice management information, regulatory issues, new technology, innovative clinical applications and protocols, and business news.

On the web site, a “most read articles” feature tracks viewership of all stories each day and collects the top 20 most read articles on an on-going basis. “Typically, a story that is read by several thousands of our subscribers will see a placement in this section,” says Jonathan Batchelor. “The composition of this list provides a snapshot of what our readers deem as the most pertinent information they need in their professional lives.”

For a true multimedia experience, the HealthImaging.com web team provides case-study like web casts combining audio, video, and textual information. All web casts are produced entirely in-house. “Web casts allow our visitors to glean the experience and best practices from their professional colleagues,” says the web editor. “Our viewers have enthusiastically endorsed our efforts in this area and we look forward to developing and delivering more of these features in the future.”

In Jonathan Batchelor’s view, the healthcare publishing industry will see a closer interaction between print and online folios in the future. “There is something uniquely satisfying about holding a journal and thumbing through its pages that simply cannot be duplicated by digital media. That being said, when I’m at my desk or on the road, I rely on web and mobile technology to provide me with breaking news and information.”

The web team is engaged in developing new features and services for its readers, as well as tighter integration with the group’s print folios. “Web-based publishing offers both writers and readers the capabilities of all other broadcast mediums – plus interactivity – in one space,” says Jonathan Batchelor. “I believe we’ve only just begun to explore its potential.”(AG)
