SIIM announces 2008 Resident Scholarship Program
Published: 12/12
LEESBURG, VA, USA - (HealthTech Wire) - The Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) has announced the third year of its scholarship program for trainees who are interested in imaging informatics. The scholarship is open to radiology residents, fellows, and medical students from North America.
"Resident involvement is a priority for SIIM at the highest levels. The resident scholarship reflects this commitment, and gives trainees from any program the ability to join the SIIM community,” said Barton F. Branstetter IV, MD, chair of the SIIM Education Committee. “We are looking forward to another successful year for the Resident Scholarship program in 2008.”
Travel expenses and meeting registration for the SIIM 2008 Annual Meeting, as well as a one-year SIIM membership, are included for the recipients. The SIIM Annual Meeting takes place in Seattle, WA, May 15-18, 2008.
Applicants are asked to submit a 500-750 word essay on the following topic: “How Imaging Informatics Affects Radiology Education.” According to Branstetter, although informatics has many applications of interest to attending radiologists in community and academic practices, there are also applications that are particular to residents and other trainees in the teaching environment. Applicants should ask themselves: What is the impact of new technology and infrastructure on radiology education? Branstetter encourages applicants to consider both positive and negative impacts, and how informatics may transform the way we teach radiology.
The winning essays will be published in the Journal of Digital Imaging or SIIM News.
Topics of interest to SIIM members include PACS (monitors, networking, and storage), digital teaching files, speech recognition, computer-aided interpretation, reading room workflow and ergonomics, and communication technologies. “Residents who have an interest in computers will find SIIM to be a welcoming group of like-minded physicians," said Branstetter.
Visit the SIIM website resident community page for more information and to obtain an application.
The application deadline is February 15, 2008.
